The Space Between Houses

Before seeing this presentation from Gel I hadn’t put much thought into the space between houses.  Ted Dewan‘s activist art he calls road witches

prick some holes in the popular delusion roads are for cars and not for life.

I completely identify with the internal changes that occur when you move into forbidden spaces.  When we first moved to town – and no sidewalks on either side of many streets – I didn’t know where to walk.  Not until the second summer did I finally break free by breaking the ‘rules’ and allow myself to walk down the middle of the neighborhood streets.

I was most inspired by the renewed sense of community and changes in behavior created by simply having something that ‘suggests the presence of people‘.  Roads meant to connect us together – not keep us apart.
