Change Comes Slowly For Women in Afghanistan

I consider myself blessed that the worst of the worst day in my life would feel like paradise for many women around the world.

We hear about the advances being made in the reconstruction of war-torn countries like Afghanistan … roads and dams are being re-built, girls attending school, people feel safer to move about, access to medical care.  Yet the world for women, especial in rural areas, remains somewhat unchanged.

This report by Margaret Warner brings us a taste of what life is like for Afghan women in 2009 and where some inroads are being made.

Transcript of Women Make Gains, but Still Struggle In Afghanistan (March 20, 2009 – PBS NewsHour)

One organization mentioned in the report is Women For Women International.  You can read their 2009 report on the conditions for women in Afghanistan or learn about women in other conflict areas such as the DRC (60 Minutes report with Anderson Cooper).

We have been involved with WFW for three years now being matched with sisters in Rwanda, Sudan and Iraq.  Exchanging letters with these women is truly inspiring and makes the world a little smaller.
