Bug Guts On The Window

Friday turned out to be a perfect day to take a whirlwind tour of Southern Alberta on some of our favourite back roads.  The scenery was a feast for the eyes with the fall reds, yellows and golds contrasted against the summer greens and sky blues.  (Pictures coming soon.)  Our souls were nourished as we shared our dreams for the future and connected with the wide open spaces where our hearts know they will be.

I couldn’t help but notice the many messages woven throughout the day.  Driving through the Frank Slide with massive boulders on either side created the same feeling as standing under the stars.  While I felt infinitesimally small I was part of a much greater force that moves mountains.  The haze on the horizon everywhere we drove reminded me a lack of clarity about what lays ahead doesn’t mean I should stop moving towards my destination.  And while I preferred some landscapes and areas more than others I saw something beautiful and wonderous by simply taking the time to look.

The funniest message had to be from the bug guts on the window.  The windshield remained quite clear until we began our journey home from Waterton in the late afternoon.  About half way home I realized the windshield was becoming quite splotted with bug remains and returned to driving.  I was so focused on the road and traffic stretching ahead the interference right in front of me became invisible.  Saturday I decided to wash the van and was shocked to see the plastered windshield.  For a  moment I was wondered if I could even drive to the car wash safely.  What a difference a day makes!

Thinking later about the bug guts I realized the power of context and holding a vision.  When I’m focused on what is “down the road” and the bigger picture, the little things become insignificant.  When I’m focused only on what’s right in front of me then the little things become huge.  The bug guts remained the same but how I viewed them certainly changed.
